The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation granted the Regents of the University of Colorado a $250,000 grant over two years for early career investigator Dr. Maria L. Amaya.

Details
Dr. Amaya with the support of her mentor, Dr. Craig Jordan, will develop effective and well-tolerated treatments for SF3B1-mutant myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Dr. Amaya hypothesizes that SF3B1-mutant MDS cells have unique metabolic needs that can be targeted, leading to new treatment strategies for this population.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center

Identifying alternatively spliced targets to develop T cell receptor (TCR) T cell therapies for myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS)

Overview
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center was awarded a $250,000 grant over two years to support early career researcher Dr. Melinda A. Biernacki.

Details
Dr. Biernacki will conduct this research with the support of her mentor Dr. Aude Chapuis to examine alternatively spliced neoepitopes from a recurrent SRSF2 mutation and begin preclinical development of TCR-engineered T cells (TCR-T) directed against them.

College Support Fund for Winning Futures College Students

Overview
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation granted $40,000 to Winning Futures to provide financial assistance for students.

Details
Winning Futures provides financial support for students’ essential and basic living expenses, ensuring extenuating financial circumstances do not prevent them from completing postsecondary education. Funds will be used for students’ utilities, tuition, transportation, and other costs.

Camp Ozanam

Overview
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has granted The Society of St. Vincent de Paul – Detroit $50,000 to ensure youth in Southeast Michigan are able to access overnight summer camp.

Details
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul – Detroit provides camp experiences for families in need, children in foster care, those who have a parent who is incarcerated, those who have recently lost a parent, and those who could not afford a camp experience otherwise. Children at Camp Ozanam have all their needs provided for at no cost.

MCREST

Hotel Sheltering of Men

Overview
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation granted $65,000 to MCREST to provide housing assistance for men while they work towards securing permanent housing.

Details
MCREST will provide accommodations for men who need housing assistance during weeks when rotating church shelters are unavailable. MCREST staff will also offer case management services to help residents transition to stable housing.

Food Assistance Programs

Overview
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation granted $25,000 to Jewish Family Service of Colorado to support its Community Resources for Stability food assistance programs.

Details
Jewish Family Service’s Community Resources for Stability has two food assistance programs, the Weinberg Food Pantry and the Mobile Food and Hygiene Pantry. These two programs will provide approximately 2,000 Denver households, including 3,000 youth, with access to healthy and culturally-relevant foods.

Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan

Community Mobile Pantry Program

Overview
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan $400,000 to distribute fresh, nutritious food to households across southeast Michigan.

Details
Gleaners’ Community Mobile Pantry (CMP) Program works across Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties using a network of more than 300 partner food pantries, shelters, schools, and other community locations. The CMP Program will support the distribution of more than 750,000 pounds of healthy and nutritious food to approximately 13,000 households.

Detroit Food Academy Afterschool Leadership, Culinary Skills, Nutrition, & Holistic Wellness Program

The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation granted $50,000 to the Detroit Food & Entrepreneurship Academy to provide afterschool programming in the culinary arts for Detroit students.

Details
Detroit Food & Entrepreneurship Academy (DFA) teaches youth how healthy eating contributes to long-term, positive health outcomes. DFA additionally introduces them to nutrition, leadership skills, budgeting, and foundational culinary skills.

Summer of Success

The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation granted $6,000 to the Center for Success Network to provide youth with academic enrichment sessions and literacy instruction.

Details
The Summer of Success is an out-of-school program that combines literacy instruction, enrichment activities, and academic and mentoring sessions, while also providing nutritious meals, snacks, and transportation.
