Detroit Police Athletic League

Overview
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Detroit Police Athletic League (Detroit PAL) a $78,934 grant that will serve youth ages 4-8 with a range of athletic programming.

Details
Detroit PAL will serve youth ages 4-8 who participate in soccer, basketball, t-ball, hockey, cheer, golf, and flag football. The grant will support uniforms, equipment, books, and healthy snacks.

Accounting Aid Society

2023 Tax Site Technology Project

Overview
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Accounting Aid Society $25,000 to purchase and deploy portable technology to help low-income clients file taxes.

Details
Accounting Aid Society will enhance and expand the technology in use at its in-person and virtual tax sites, which will decrease the overall time needed to provide service to clients and increase the overall number of clients served. Accounting Aid anticipates that it will be able to serve 16,000 clients in 2023, an increase of approximately 10% over the 2022 tax season.

Midnight Golf Program

The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Midnight Golf Program a $134,800 grant for food costs for the 2022-2023 Life Skills and Mentorship Program.

Details
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation will support food costs associated with Midnight Golf Program’s 2022-2023 Life Skills and Mentorship Program. The catered dinners will be provided during each of the weekly program days between October 2022 and May 2023.

Increasing Career Pathways in Veterinary Medicine for a Thriving Workforce & Economy

Overview
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Michigan Humane $500,000, over 5 years, to provide career pathway exposure, employment and mentorship for youth and young adults to develop future veterinary talent.

Details
Nationwide, a shortage of veterinary talent is impacting access to veterinary care. As pet ownership continues to rise, the gap between need and availability will grow. This exacerbates the difficulty of accessing veterinary care many families are already facing due to poverty and other challenges. Additionally, veterinary medicine suffers from a lack of diversity among veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians.

Growing Hope

Creating Safe Spaces & Nutritional Support for Ypsilanti Youth Through Agricultural Apprenticeship

The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Growing Hope a $33,500 grant to provide employment and leadership development opportunities for local teens.

Details
As a result of limited access to fresh, affordable and culturally relevant food, diet-related health diseases are increasingly prevalent. Growing Hope’s Teen Leadership Program provides meaningful employment and leadership development opportunities, as well as addresses health inequities through wraparound programming by prioritizing local, often SNAP-eligible teens.

Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic

Free Dentures for Uninsured, Low-Income Adults

The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic a $130,000 grant to expand its free dentures program for uninsured, low-income adults.

Details
Patients who go to Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic for dental care have spent months, sometimes years with tooth decay and missing teeth. This affects their nutrition, appearance, self-confidence, and mental health. This grant will support materials and supplies needed to prepare a patient for dentures, and the outside lab work to create partial or full dentures.

Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan

Produce Mobile Distribution Program

Overview
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan $475,000 to distribute fresh, nutritious produce to food-insecure households across southeast Michigan.

Details
The Foundation will support food purchases for Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan’s mobile distribution program across Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties. This will help Gleaners cover the increase in demand, decreased food donations, and increased food costs to ensure that it can continue to provide food for children, families, seniors, and veterans.

The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Friendship Circle a $500,000 matching grant for scholarships to support artists with special needs from low-income backgrounds.

Details
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation Soul Studio is a professional art studio and gallery that helps build contemporary art careers and acts as a community for adults with disabilities. Through educational programming, participants are supported by professional artists and volunteers in a variety of art mediums, including painting, drawing, ceramics, weaving, sculpture, woodworking, and digital arts. A grant from the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation will provide scholarships for artists with special needs from low-income backgrounds with limited financial capacity.
