The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Denver Art Museum (DAM) a $120,000 grant, over two years, to sustain and expand Art Lives Here // El Arte Vive Aquí, an off-site school and community center art engagement program.

Details
Art Lives Here is a bilingual, collaborative program between the DAM and under-resourced schools and community centers that brings exhibitions, artists’ workshops, professional development, and artmaking experiences beyond the walls of the museum. The program complements school curriculum and partner programming by promoting access to creative and cultural exploration and encouraging self-discovery through art.

Figure Skating in Detroit

Future Pathways for Girls of Color in Detroit

Overview
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Figure Skating in Detroit $75,000, over three years, to offer new and expanded opportunities for young girls participating in its afterschool program.

Details
Support from the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation will offer opportunities for girls in the I Can Excel afterschool program in two key areas: College & Career Readiness programming and the Synchronized Skating Team. The College & Career Readiness component includes college campus visits, guest speakers from professional women leaders and a summer employment program. The Synchronized Skating Team will attract and retain higher-level skaters, as well as provide academic and leadership skills for post-secondary scholarships and future career opportunities.

University of Rochester

The role of the stem cell niche in the progression of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) to secondary acute myeloid leukemia (sAML)

Overview
University of Rochester was awarded a $249,954 grant over two years to support early career investigator Dr. Shu-Chi Yeh.

Details
Dr. Yeh will conduct this research with the support of her mentor Dr. Michael Becker to understand critical components of the bone marrow microenvironment (the niche) that enables early-stage competitive advantages of MDS subclones associated with sAML transformation, with the aims of identifying new therapeutic candidates.

Dissecting the Biology of the DNA Damage Response Genes TP53 and PPM1D in Myelodysplastic Syndrome

The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation granted Massachusetts General Hospital a $250,000 grant over two years for early career investigator Dr. Peter Miller.

Details
Dr. Miller with the support of his mentor, Dr. Benjamin Ebert, seeks to understand how TP53 and PPM1D differ in mediating the DNA damage response to yield deeper insights into how hematopoietic cells respond to genotoxic stress and enable new therapeutic opportunities for therapy-related MDS.

Clonal and Microenvironment Crosstalk in DDX41-Mutant MDS

Overview
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center was awarded a $250,000 grant over two years to support early career investigator Dr. Timothy Chlon.

Details
Dr. Chlon will conduct this research with the support of his mentor Dr. Lee Grimes to study the interaction of monoallelic and biallelic DDX41-mutant hematopoietic clones with each other and the DDX41-mutant microenvironment to elucidate the role of these mutations in MDS.

Activation of a Neighborhood Portal to College and Career in Northwest Detroit

The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Racquet Up Detroit a $200,000 grant to support its college and career programs over two years.

Details
With support from the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation, Racquet Up Detroit will activate its new facility as a neighborhood portal to college and career. The program will help students get back on track for post-secondary success following the impact of the pandemic. Key elements include intensive academic support, college tours, college success support, career exposure and guidance, and professional development for program alumni who are employed at Racquet Up Detroit.

City of Hope

A novel strategy to prevent malignant transformation of MDS

Overview
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation granted City of Hope a $500,000 grant over two years for established investigator Dr. Ling Li.

Details
The goal of Dr. Li’s research project is to understand how miR-126 promotes the MDS HSPCs to acquire additional abnormalities associated with transformation and test if miR-126 inhibitor could suppress evolution of aberrant MDS HSPCs, thereby preventing progression to AML.

Math Corps

Math Corps Summer Camp 2022

Overview
The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Math Corps $104,000 to employ college students at its annual summer camp.

Details
During Math Corps’ Summer Camp, 400 middle and high school Detroit students from public schools receive math instruction in basic and advanced topics at Wayne State University. Funds from the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation will be used to employ college students who work as instructors and mentors.

Emergency Food Distribution

The Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation has awarded Lighthouse MI a $150,000 grant to sustain and expand its emergency food distribution program.

Details
Behind housing and transportation, food is the third highest household expense. Funds from the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation will support Lighthouse MI’s food programs that ensure low-income households in Oakland County have access to healthy, nutritious food.
